FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

for 'Day in the Life' - Documentary Family Photography

1. What is documentary family photography and Day in the Life session? / 甚麼是紀實家庭攝影和 'Day in the Life' 拍攝?

Documentary Family Photography, also known as Family Photojournalism or Family Reportage, and sometimes referred to as ‘Day in the Life’ Photography, involves capturing the authentic daily lives of families in a journalistic style. Unlike traditional family photography, which often includes posed shots and staged settings, documentary family photographers do not direct or pose family members. Instead, they observe the interactions among family members and capture fleeting moments of life through their lenses. These seemingly ordinary daily moments can become invaluable images decades later, preserving real and interesting family histories and stories for future generations.

Traditional family photography typically involves pre-arranged scenes, props, and costumes, while documentary family photography emphasizes authenticity and does not impose such constraints. Documentary family photographers come to your home to shoot or accompany you on outings, so there's no need to prepare props or outfits; you simply continue with your everyday life.

紀實家庭攝影 / Documentary Family Photography,也被稱作 Family Photojournalism、Family Reportage (或作「家庭攝影記者」),或 ‘Day in the Life’ Photography (「生命中的一天」),是指以新聞攝影的方式拍攝真實的家庭日常生活。

2. Who should book a DITL session? / DITL session

The ‘Day in the Life’ session is suitable for any family, especially those with young children. For families who dislike the uniformity or overly staged nature of traditional family photography (like shooting in a studio with artificial scenes), the ‘Day in the Life’ session is particularly fitting. In daily life, you might capture moments of your family members with a camera, but this means you cannot be in the frame or fully enjoy quality time with loved ones. A documentary family photographer can serve you well in this regard.

‘Day in the Life’ session

3. Do I need to prepare anything before the DITL session? /

As mentioned, the ‘Day in the Life’ session aims to capture the authentic moments of family life. You can maintain your usual daily routines and conditions without any special preparations. For example, there's no need to wear matching family outfits, put on makeup before the shoot, or tidy up the house excessively—just keep everything in its normal state. Sometimes, I describe this everyday state as "perfectly imperfect," because that is real life; everyone’s life is like that. Of course, you can share your family's daily schedule with me. Activities like preparing breakfast together, reading or playing with your kids, or having fun at the park or beach are all great subjects for photography. The ‘Day in the Life’ session is not limited to indoor shoots; you can absolutely plan outdoor activities as well.

‘Day in the Life’ session

4. Do you do formal family portraits? /

As mentioned, the ‘Day in the Life’ session is designed to capture the authentic moments of family life, rather than portrait photography. During the session, if you would like to take one or two family photos, you can certainly request it, but this will not be the focus of the ‘Day in the Life’ session. If you're looking for posed photographs, there are many traditional family photographers in the market who can meet your needs.

Day in the Life’ session

5. Do you photograph birthday or baby's 100-days celebration? /

Yes, events such as birthday parties, baby’s 100 days celebrations, childbirth records, the first 24 hours after a baby's birth, gender reveal party, 'one-year-old-catch', baptisms or christenings, these are all part of family life. I will also document these milestone moments using the principles of documentary photography.

6. Are you pet-friendly? /

Yes, I love animals, so I am definitely pet-friendly, and pets are indeed part of the family. In fact, some clients specifically ask me to capture their everyday moments with their pets. Similarly, you need to keep in mind that this is not a posed portrait session; it is documentary family photography that records real moments.

7. Do you edit all the photos? /

Most photographers on the market only retouch a certain number of photos, and additional images may incur extra charges. I will handpick photos for you, just like a photojournalist and an editor, to create a cohesive narrative family album. Every photo will be personally edited by me, including basic adjustments to exposure, contrast, and colour, and these are included in the fee for each package—there are no additional charges. All photos will be delivered as high-resolution JPEG files. Original files (RAW) will not be provided.

8. Do you deliver coloured version of any black and white pictures? /

I have a strong passion for black and white photography. Black and white images possess a timeless quality and can more purely convey the emotions and stories within the photos, which is why many documentary photographers choose to use them. In fact, many clients find that black and white photos leave a deeper impression. However, in some Chinese communities, particularly among the older generation, black and white photos can be considered a taboo. When I shoot in black and white, I also provide clients with the colour versions, so you can rest assured.

9. How long do I need to wait to receive the photos? /

Since I carefully select and edit each photo, and also process the colour versions for black and white images, I spend double or even more time on post-production compared to many family photographers. This is part of my commitment to photography. Generally speaking, for a full-day shoot, it takes about four to six weeks from the shooting day to the delivery of the photos. While you patiently wait, I typically send a small selection of edited photos in advance for you to share with your family members.

10. Do you travel overseas? /

Yes. I currently reside in Taiwan and have primarily served clients from Hong Kong, but I am also happy to photograph families from other countries. I work with families traveling to Hong Kong or Taiwan, and similarly, I enjoy photographing families from Hong Kong or Taiwan traveling abroad. Feel free to inquire or make a reservation. In addition to the photography fees, travel and accommodation costs will be charged as needed.

11. How do I reserve your service? /

You can contact me and make a reservation via email, WhatsApp, or Signal; clients in Taiwan can also use LINE. Generally, a 30% deposit is required to secure the reservation date. If circumstances permit, I also accept last-minute bookings.
