Rawlinson House & Popinjays Wedding
Bride & Groom : Sophia & Ola / Ceremony : Rawlinson House (Cotton Tree Drive Marriage Registry) / Reception : Popinjays
On January 26, 1841, Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire. From then on, this once desolate and unknown land underwent more than a century of transformation, evolving into the world-renowned "Pearl of the Orient." I was born in Hong Kong in the 1980s, a time when East and West coexisted, and different cultures thrived together in an era of prosperity. Since I started photographing weddings, I’ve come to love the documentary photography style that originated in Western countries. My clients come from all over the world, with diverse cultural backgrounds, not just from Hong Kong. The wedding of Sophia and Ola, a cross-national marriage between Hong Kong and Norway, is a perfect example.
Documentary wedding photography, originated in Europe and America, has gradually become a popular style in their wedding markets. In Chinese communities, however, documentary wedding photographers are still rare. But this style, which emphasizes real stories and emotions while rejecting staged poses, can be applied anywhere in the world. I’ve always hoped to introduce this style to more people and show couples that, beyond the mainstream, there are other options better suited to them. When I meet couples who appreciate this style, I feel particularly happy!
On the eve of Sophia and Ola's wedding, Hong Kong experienced one of the heaviest rainstorms on record. Many areas in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon were flooded, and the wedding ceremony had to be postponed to the following day. Fortunately, the luncheon took place as scheduled, and I was able to travel to the venue and photograph the event even though transportation had not fully recovered. Their good friends even prepared two confetti walks for them! This made the wedding especially memorable for me!
I hope to start with this set of photos and gradually add more collections in the future, allowing those interested in documentary photography—whether couples planning to get married or parents — to better understand this style. I would also love the opportunity to photograph your special occasion!
